Dick Kingsbury on the Dozer in 1978

Kingsbury began in 1978 when Richard (Dick) and Laura Kingsbury started Kingsbury Construction Co. Inc. with only a John Deere 450 Dozer and the dream of creating a successful business. With an office out of their kitchen and a loan from Dick’s parents, they set out to take the Mad River Valley by storm.

They began hiring their first employees, who are known today as pillars of this Company, and in 1980 built their first shop out behind their home in Fayston, VT. Their son, Travis (TJ) began working for them at twelve years old and took a dedicated interest in “the business.” They continued gaining valuable work with major customers, such as Sugarbush and the State of Vermont and began developing a very reputable name for their business. In 1998, they purchased the Mad River Park, where the current maintenance shop and satellite offices are now located.

Travis, now President and Owner, began working in the family excavation business as a laborer, became an equipment operator, then pipe foreman. In 1997, he left Vermont in order to obtain his bachelor’s degree in Construction Management from Montana State University. During which time and shortly thereafter, he worked as Project Engineer and Superintendent for Barnard Construction Company of Bozeman, MT in California, Florida and South Carolina constructing multi-million-dollar dams and water distribution projects.

In the fall 0f 2003, Travis returned home to Vermont and again began working for the family business as Vice President of Operations. Travis began composing a solid management team from his first days returning to the business with a vision for the future of the Kingsbury name.

After receiving a loan from his parents, Travis separated himself from Kingsbury Construction Co., Inc. and opened up Kingsbury Companies LLC in 2008. As Travis’ main focus from his return to Vermont had been in heavy-civil construction projects in a larger geographic region than his parent’s original reaches at the time, the separation made sense. Kingsbury Companies LLC grew into a General Contractor specializing in heavy civil projects across New England.

2018 marked the 10-year anniversary for Kingsbury Companies LLC and a whopping 40 years in business for Kingsbury Construction Company, Incorporated.

As the organization shifts into the next decade, the company will be referred to simply as KINGSBURY. A name that we are proud of, as it is the dedicated efforts to service, adaptability, efficiency, and honesty of all its loyal employees that have given that name its value and meaning.
